What is Competitor Traffic Analysis?

Competitor Traffic Analysis

Competitor traffic analysis is all about studying the website traffic of your competitors to understand their strategies and performance. The goal is to gather insights that you can use to improve your website and attract more visitors. Tools like Semrush’s Traffic Analytics can provide you with valuable data, such as:

  • How much traffic your competitors are driving
  • The growth or decline in their audience
  • Which channels bring in the most traffic
  • How users engage with their site (e.g., bounce rate, average session duration)
  • The top-performing pages and demographics of their audience

By gaining competitive intelligence, you can learn from their successes and avoid their mistakes.

Can You Track Competitor Website Traffic?

Track Competitor Website Traffic

While you can track your website traffic using Google Analytics, it won’t provide insights into your competitors’ performance. This is where specialised tools like Semrush’s Traffic Analytics come in. These tools gather clickstream data from over 200 million internet users, providing an estimate of your competitor’s traffic and engagement. With this data, you’ll be able to get a comprehensive view of your competitor’s audience, user journey, and more.

Step 1: Measure Competitor Website Traffic

Measure Competitor Website Traffic

To begin, enter your competitor’s website URL into the Traffic Analytics tool and hit “Analyse.” You’ll immediately see broad metrics such as:

  • Visits: The total number of visits to the website during that month
  • Unique Visitors: The number of unique individuals who visited the site
  • Pages/Visit: The average number of pages a person views during a visit
  • Avg. Visit Duration: How long visitors stay on the site
  • Bounce Rate: The percentage of visitors who leave the site after viewing just one page

You can compare these metrics with your website to get an initial understanding of how you stack up against your competitors.

Step 2: Examine Traffic Trends Over Time

Examine Traffic Trends Across Time

Now that you have a general idea of your competitor’s traffic, it’s time to dive deeper. Scroll down to the Trend by Competitors graph in the Traffic Analytics dashboard. This shows traffic metrics over time, allowing you to spot any patterns or trends, like spikes or drops in traffic.

  • Did they experience a sudden traffic spike? What caused it?
  • Is the drop in traffic seasonal, or did something change on their website?

By identifying these patterns, you can replicate successful strategies or avoid mistakes that lead to traffic loss.

Step 3: Compare User Experience Metrics

Compare User Experience Metrics

It’s not just about the number of visitors. It’s also about how those visitors engage with the site. Comparing user experience metrics (like bounce rate, pages per visit, and average visit duration) across your competitors can provide valuable insights.

A high number of visitors can be misleading if user engagement is low. For instance, if a competitor has a high bounce rate, it might indicate that their content isn’t engaging or relevant. By avoiding their mistakes, you can improve your own user experience.

Step 4: Track Traffic Sources and User Journeys

Track Traffic Sources and User Journeys

Where does your competitor’s traffic come from? What happens after users visit their site? Semrush’s Traffic Journey report shows you the traffic sources and the path visitors take. You’ll see:

  • The channels that drive traffic (organic search, paid search, social media, etc.)
  • The websites users visit before and after your competitor’s site

This data helps you identify successful traffic-driving channels. You can replicate their strategies by targeting the same channels, creating similar content, or improving on what they’ve done.

Step 5: Explore Top Pages and Subfolders

Explore Top Pages and Subfolders

To go deeper, head to the Top Pages tab in the Traffic Analytics tool. This section shows which pages of your competitor’s website receive the most traffic. You’ll also see where their traffic comes from (organic, paid, or social).

Additionally, checking the Subfolders and Subdomains tabs will show you which sections of their site are most popular. Do they have subfolders focused on specific topics or products? Should you create similar subfolders to target similar audiences?

Step 6: Global Traffic Distribution

Global Traffic Distribution

If you’re interested in global traffic, Semrush’s Geo Distribution tab shows where your competitors’ traffic is coming from worldwide. By looking at the Traffic Map and Trend by Visits graphs, you can identify which countries are driving the most traffic to their site.

For example, if a competitor has a significant presence in a country you’re not targeting, it might be an opportunity for you to explore that market.

Step 7: Dive Deeper with Further Analysis

Keyword Gap Analysis

Once you have a good grasp of your competitor’s traffic, take it a step further. Conduct a keyword gap analysis to find keywords that your competitors rank for but you don’t. Also, consider looking at backlinks they have that you don’t, or identify their best-performing pages and create something even better.

By utilising Semrush’s suite of competitor analysis tools, you’ll stay ahead of the competition and position yourself for success.

Conclusion

Competitor website traffic analysis is an ongoing process. By regularly monitoring your competitors and comparing their strategies with your own, you can uncover opportunities to improve your website’s performance. Use the data to learn from their successes and avoid their mistakes, and you’ll see a steady increase in your traffic.
