What Most Advertisers Miss When Targeting Viewers On Streaming Media

What Most Advertisers Miss When Targeting Viewers On Streaming Media

Key Takeaways:

  • Most CTV strategies miss the mark by relying on outdated demographic models
  • Programmatic delivery can underperform without clear content or context filters
  • Viewer behaviour on Connected TV requires smarter timing and tailored creative
  • Performance metrics need attribution planning that reflects cross-device usage

If you’ve ever run ads on streaming platforms, or even thought about it, you’ve probably been told it’s simple: upload the video, pick an audience, and hit go.

But that’s exactly why most brands are missing the opportunity.

People don’t watch streaming TV the way they watch traditional TV, and they definitely don’t engage the way they do with mobile social feeds. Viewer behaviour has changed dramatically. Ad strategy hasn’t.

So while many marketers assume streaming TV — or the technical term for it, Connected TV (CTV) — is just an extension of their digital video plan, the truth is this: if you treat streaming TV like YouTube or linear broadcast, your campaigns will underperform.

Let’s break down why.

Targeting Viewers On Streaming Media

Where the Gaps Usually Start: Audience Data vs. Actual Viewing Patterns

Most targeting strategies still rely on the kind of demographic assumptions that worked when everyone watched the same show at 7:30 pm. That predictability doesn’t exist anymore. With CTV, two people in the same household might stream entirely different things on different devices — sometimes in the same room. And while age, income, or postcode might hint at who’s watching, it rarely tells you when or why.

This disconnect is exactly where better tools can make a difference. Streaming media advertising solutions help bridge that behavioural gap. Instead of targeting based on assumed traits, campaigns can tap into session-level data that shows not just who might be watching, but also how they’re watching. That means smarter placements based on app usage, content type, and even time of day — all with less waste and better frequency control.

It’s a shift from hoping your ad lands somewhere valuable to knowing when and where it’s most likely to matter.

The Disconnect Between Creative and Delivery Timing

A lot of brands still treat CTV creative like print — make it once and push it everywhere. That kind of static delivery doesn’t match how viewers actually engage. One person might catch your spot during a binge session at 1 am. Another might see it once on a news app and never again. If your ad runs on a fixed schedule or blanket distribution, you’re either showing up too much or not at all.

Timing is often overlooked, but it’s one of the biggest factors in getting results. People aren’t just watching at random — they’re watching with intention. Whether it’s winding down with a drama series or checking weather updates in the morning, the context of the content matters. Your delivery strategy should be built around that — not just reach and impressions, but relevance and rhythm.

CTV gives you more control than linear ever did. If you’re not adjusting delivery based on how your audience actually watches, you’re not really using the platform to its full potential.

Over-Reliance on Programmatic Doesn’t Guarantee Quality

There’s a widespread belief that once a campaign is plugged into a programmatic platform, it’s basically self-optimising. In theory, that’s true — but only if the setup is right. Most of the time, it’s not. The automation meant to improve efficiency can easily push ads into low-attention environments, irrelevant apps, or placements with almost no engagement data.

The issue isn’t with programmatic itself, but with how lightly it’s often managed. Frequency caps get ignored. Targeting is set too broadly. Inventory is selected for cost, not context. So while your reports might show substantial delivery numbers, the real-world value of those impressions remains unclear.

Connected TV needs oversight that matches the platform’s complexity. That means more than setting a few filters and hoping for the best. Without active curation — the kind that understands both content types and audience behaviour — you end up with reach that doesn’t convert and exposure that doesn’t stick.

Measuring Performance Without Clear Attribution Models

Unlike digital display or social, Connected TV rarely offers a clear click-to-conversion trail. And while many marketers understand this, few adjust their performance expectations accordingly. That gap between measurement and outcome can lead to underreporting success — or chasing the wrong metrics entirely.

Attribution in CTV is possible, but it requires upfront planning. Device matching, IP tracking, and incremental lift studies can all help quantify a campaign’s performance. The problem is, many campaigns don’t build that structure in from the start. So, when results are reviewed, the conversation becomes guesswork: Did the ad actually drive anything? Or was it just seen?

Without a model that accounts for viewer behaviour across devices, it’s easy to miss what’s working. And once the budget shifts back toward platforms with easier-to-read dashboards, long-term strategy suffers. Measuring Connected TV requires its own logic—one that reflects how people actually move from screen to action.

Why Creative Built for Social Doesn’t Translate to Connected TV

It’s tempting to pull a high-performing Instagram reel or YouTube pre-roll and run it as a CTV ad. The content’s already there, it’s short, and it performs well on mobile — so why not repurpose it? The answer is simple: CTV isn’t social. The way people engage with their television is entirely different. They’re leaning back, not scrolling. They’re expecting longer content, uninterrupted viewing, and production that feels made for the screen it’s on.

When social content is dropped into a CTV environment, it often lands flat. It’s paced too fast. It’s built for sound-off viewing. It assumes the viewer is glancing rather than watching. That disconnect shows — and it affects how well the message is absorbed. Connected TV calls for ads that feel intentional. That doesn’t mean expensive. It means tailored. Creative that opens with a visual hook, sets a scene, and holds attention tends to perform better, especially when it aligns with the type of content it’s running alongside.

For brands, this means thinking less about repurposing and more about placement. Not just what the ad says, but how it fits within the viewing moment it’s entering.

Better Planning Starts With Smarter Questions

If your Connected TV campaigns aren’t getting the cut-through they should, the problem likely isn’t the platform — it’s the assumptions behind how it’s being used. Success here isn’t about having the loudest message or the widest reach. It’s about understanding the medium, respecting how people actually watch, and building your strategy around those real behaviours. That’s where campaigns stop getting skipped — and start getting noticed.
