(Part 1) What Is An Ideal Customer Avatar?

(Part 1) What Is An Ideal Customer Avatar?
Read the video transcript

So, we got some ideas of who your actual ideal avatar maybe. Now, it's going to be someone who's typically going to be looking to book your services or products or buy your products. And also you need to make sure that you have documented exactly what this is. This isn't something that floats around in your head. It needs to be written down.

Because the effort of writing it down, and I'm going to show you in detail how we do that helps to establish exactly who it is that we are talking to. And it also means that you can use that within your business if you have other members of staff, because we are then working together cohesively to make sure we are all working to the same avatar.

Now, you may have multiple avatars. We do in our business. You may have multiple products, and for each product or service, you may then have multiple avatars. And that's okay too. But generalising will mean that your messaging won't work. So, one way of doing this is manually and that one of the ways that I've historically done it is to use just a very simple customer avatar worksheet.

If you get in touch with us and you'd like the actual worksheet, obviously we can email that to you. However, later today I'll be showing you, you don't possibly need this, but I need to show you how we do this manually. Because later I'll be showing you how we use Al to help us in our businesses, which will be really useful to business owners that are not marketers.

It's not how I do it, but this is how I would suggest you do it. So the customer avatar we're going to, it's almost like a plane. So we're going to. I don't think the pointer works. We're going to work on that middle section first, sort out the little wings on the edges, the frustrations and fears, the wants and aspirations, and then we return back to the before and after state.

So I'm going to show you how we do that. So the first part, really, really obvious is the avatar and the demographics area. And, and these are the typical bits that you're going to fill in. So there's a long list there of the kinds of things. Now there are the obvious ones, the age, the occupation, the income, education level, marital status.

We've got all of those covered, but we're going a little bit deeper now. Who is that personality? Where do they hang out? What are they interested in? So again, going back to when I was a photographer and we had a portrait studio, I sat and thought about who is one of my ideal avatars. Now, knowing that most of the time the portrait bookings would come from the mum of the household.

But at the end of the day, it's the probably the dad of the household who's probably deciding whether it's a good idea or not. Because women generally are more up for family photos than men, but they also have to be in agreement.

An ideal customer avatar (ICA) is a detailed, fictional representation of your perfect customer. It’s more than just knowing basic details like age, income, or location. An ICA helps you understand who your target customer truly is, what they care about, their challenges, and what drives them. This allows you to craft messaging, products, and services that connect with them on a deeper level.

Why Do You Need an Ideal Customer Avatar?

Having a clear ICA is vital for any business. Without it, your marketing efforts will likely be all over the place. You might end up appealing to too broad an audience, which means your message won’t resonate deeply with anyone. The more specific you are, the better your chances of attracting the right customer. A well-defined ICA ensures your messaging is focused, your content aligns with their needs, and your product or service can genuinely solve their problems.

Creating an ICA isn’t just about demographic details. Sure, age, job title, income, and marital status are all important, but you need to dig deeper. Consider the following:

  1. Demographics: Basic info like age, gender, job title, income, education, and family situation.
  2. Psychographics: What are their values, interests, and personality traits? Where do they hang out online? What are their hobbies or passions? This will help you build a more human picture of your customer.
  3. Pain Points and Frustrations: What challenges are they facing that your product or service can help solve? Understanding this will guide your messaging.
  4. Goals and Aspirations: What do they want to achieve? This is what you’re selling – the transformation your customer will experience after working with you.
  5. Before and After States: What is their life like before using your product or service? And how will it be different after? This contrast is key in creating powerful messaging.
Customer Avatar Worksheet

How Do You Create Your Avatar?

You don’t need fancy tools or AI to create your ideal customer avatar. Many successful business owners start with something simple, like a customer avatar worksheet. Here’s how to build one manually:

  1. Identify Who Your Ideal Customer Is: Think about the customers who buy your product or service most frequently. Who are they? Where do they work? What do they care about?
  2. Break Down Their Demographics: This is the easiest part. Fill in the details: age, income, marital status, etc. But remember, this is just the starting point.
  3. Dive Deeper: Look beyond surface-level data. What are their values? What do they do in their free time? What are they afraid of? Understanding their mindset will help you connect with them emotionally.
  4. Document Everything: Once you’ve created your ICA, write it all down. This isn’t something you want floating around in your head. By documenting it, you create a clear reference point for your marketing, sales, and product decisions.
  5. Use Your Avatar to Shape Your Messaging: Once you know who your customer is, everything becomes easier. Your content, advertising, and product development can all be designed around their needs, ensuring better engagement and conversions.

What if You Have Multiple Avatars?

It’s not unusual for businesses to have more than one ideal customer avatar. If you offer different products or services, each one might attract a slightly different customer. For example, if you’re a photographer, your ideal customer might vary depending on whether you’re offering family portraits, weddings, or corporate headshots. That’s fine. The key is to make sure your messaging for each avatar is as specific as possible.

Putting It All Together

Creating your ideal customer avatar might take some time and thought, but it’s worth the effort. Having a clear, well-documented ICA will help you target your marketing efforts and serve your customers better. And remember, this process doesn’t need to be complicated. Whether you’re using a worksheet or diving deep into their psychology, the goal is to truly understand who you’re talking to and how you can serve them best.
