Part 2 – Who Is Your Ideal Customer Avatar?

Part 2 – Who Is Your Ideal Customer Avatar?
Read the video transcript

And so, I worked out that my ideal avatar is a male in his 50s who probably works in Milton Keynes, probably one of the head offices, a decent job, decent income. The kids are heading for being teenagers. So, Mum also has an income and is settled now in her life. She's got over the whole shock of having kids and all of that.

She's got into a little rhythm now and they are aspirational for their children. They want them to succeed well at school. They're into hobbies, afternoon clubs, etc. Where does he hang out now? He probably hangs out at networking events. He is a business, possibly a business owner, and he's likely to look after himself too, so he's probably at the gym.

He's more likely to be a Waitrose shopper than an elder shopper. It's understanding where they hang out, because identifying it is one thing, but where are they? Where am I going to find them? So, once I'd identified, long before I knew I'd be doing this in this way, it made it so much easier to target who they are, because when it came to the conversations on the phone, you are extracting information and I'll be showing you again later how we manage lead information to see that, yes, this is worth pursuing, or is this a colder lead and probably not worth following through on?

So, we have lots of basic information that kicks off this early part. So, for this exercise, I've just chosen an avatar, which is a guy called Richard. He's in his mid-50s and he's got his own digital marketing business. He's out in the US, but he's struggling because although he's winning work, he doesn't actually know how to deliver it.

So, he's got some pain points going on in his business. And the reason we've created this avatar, this is an example of how we at SF Digital would be targeting this avatar, because one of our products in our business is a course on Google Ads and YouTube and they can sign in, etc. So, we've sat down and worked out who would be an ideal avatar for us to promote our course too.

So just to give you context as to why I've chosen him, unless there's some basic information of the kind of things that he's interested in. Now we get to the slightly darker side. We need to know his frustrations and his fears. This is where the imposter syndrome is coming in for him, because he's getting these clients, but he then can't necessarily deliver the work, which means he can't deliver them results.

If he doesn't deliver results, he's ultimately going to lose those clients. So, what are his darker fears and what's annoying him about this thing that he can't actually quite deliver? What's he having to do that's making it tricky for him?

Understanding your ideal customer avatar (ICA) is one of the most important steps in growing your business. It’s not enough to have a general idea of who you’re selling to—you need to know them inside and out. In this post, we’re going to dive into how to create a clear picture of your ideal customer and why this is a game-changer for your marketing strategy.

Who Is the Ideal Customer Avatar?

Simply put, your ICA is a detailed representation of your perfect customer. Think of them as the person who will benefit most from what you offer, the one who is likely to make a purchase and become a loyal advocate of your business. But how do you get there?

What Does Your Ideal Customer Look Like?

Now, let’s build a picture of Richard’s life. He’s a business owner, probably in a well-established location, like Milton Keynes, and he has a solid income. His kids are growing up, and his wife is also contributing to the household income. They’re stable, settled, and looking for ways to improve their lives.

Richard probably enjoys hobbies, like attending networking events or working out at the gym. He’s likely a Waitrose shopper, not one to cut corners when it comes to quality. He’s not just interested in business; he’s thinking about his family’s future too, so he might be focused on helping his kids succeed academically and socially.

Why Does Knowing Your ICA Matter?

Once you’ve figured out your ideal customer, targeting becomes much easier. For instance, let’s say you run a Google Ads and YouTube course. You would want to target someone like Richard who needs help delivering results to his clients. Knowing his struggles, like imposter syndrome and the pressure to perform, allows you to speak directly to those pain points in your marketing.

By understanding Richard’s specific needs and wants, you can create tailored content that resonates with him. Whether it’s blog posts, ads, or email campaigns, your message will feel personal and relevant, which makes it far more likely to convert.

Frustrations And Fears

Digging Deeper into Frustrations and Fears

It’s important to go beyond surface-level traits and dive into your ICA’s frustrations, fears, and challenges. Richard’s situation, for example, isn’t just about running a business. It’s about feeling like an imposter, worrying that his clients will leave if he can’t deliver. These fears are powerful motivators, allowing you to step in with solutions.

Addressing these concerns in your messaging helps build trust. Instead of just selling a product, you’re offering a way out of his problems. Whether that’s through a course or a service, knowing what keeps your ICA up at night makes it easier to position your offer as the solution.

Conclusion

Creating an ideal customer avatar is about more than just demographics. It’s about understanding your customer’s daily life, frustrations, fears, and dreams. When you have a detailed picture of who you’re serving, your marketing becomes more effective, your outreach is more focused, and your conversions are higher.

Remember, the more specific you can get with your ICA, the better you can address their needs. This makes all the difference in building a successful business that resonates with real people.
