Part 5 – Who Is Your Ideal Customer Avatar?

Part 5 – Who Is Your Ideal Customer Avatar?
Read the video transcript

How is he feeling before and after? So, first of all, he's going to be feeling frustrated. He's not able to serve authentically. He's tired from the amount of individual work he's having to do with each one. How many of us feel that it's really hard work to keep going to each individual client and you've got to. With each individual client, they've got to feel like they're the only client and we're doing our best for them and they put your phone down to them or send off the email and then you gotta do it for the next one.

But if you can systemise, so a lot of it’s step will repeat, you can chunk through volumes of work. One of the things I'm often asked is, how do you get through so much stuff? I wear lots of different hats and one I touched on, which thankfully is now parked, but there are lots of other hats even now.

And the way it's done is being organised and actually just chunking down common threads of avatars. Right, this lot need this stuff done. Let's get them done, let's get them served, this lot need this done and so on. So it's just about being organised. Click that too soon. So here we go. Yeah. How does he feel? So we've going from frustration to taking him to feeling confident and a little bit more in control and a bit more accomplished in what he's actually doing, because he's got that skill set now.

His status. What is this all about? So this is about describing the status of our avatar before he has our course in place and then after he's got this. So this is about the narrative they're telling themselves. And this is again touching a little bit on that imposter syndrome. So at the moment, he appears to be able to cover all those business areas.

He sold it. We probably all have done that. I know I've done that. You get an enquiry for a job, especially in the photography days, and I've already told you, with zero photography knowledge, you know, can you take photographs of teddy bears in the shopping centre and print them out on site? Yes, I can do that. That was my very first job for build a bear factory in Watford.

And I had queues wrapped around the aisles. Now, I could do it, but it wasn't as efficient as I would have liked it. And we soon changed the efficiency on that one. But we take the job on and then we figure out how we're going to deliver it. And at this stage, that is little bit of imposter because inside you're thinking, can’t really deliver this?

But actually, in this case, having the course, he can deliver it because he's got the knowledge and he's got the understanding. Good versus evil. I was feel like I should have some wicked witch and a fairy on the side of this particular slide. On a deeper level, going really, really broad, what is it that would be the absolute disaster if he didn't have this course versus what is that amazing moment that he's going to feel if he does get the course?

So before he's not going to be able to grow his business because he's stuck in that negative place of never being able to serve. And it's actually going to start getting really, really tedious for him because he knows he can't quite do it. He can't keep selling like this. He needs to do something different. And so of course, the good, the amazing part, the fairy godmother, is having the course.

He's got the confidence, the work gets really seamless. He is fairly knowledgeable and that comes across in everything he's doing. So that's that good versus evil. And so now your sheet should be looking like this. So I've pulled in all those different little pieces and it's done. Now, to do this manually, I would say takes anything from 1:30 to 2:00 hours.

If you are sitting and doing this properly, it will really get your sort of mental juices flowing when you're doing it, because you can see. And I've done this very fast. So thank you for your patience on that. But. But I hope it's giving you that little insight as to how important that avatar work is and you need to do it for all your products.

Now, one way you can do it for those businesses that have already been going for a while, and I think there's quite a few in this room. Pick. You can either pick random sample, go back to your invoicing, pick up some clients, or be selective. You could say who are the ones I enjoyed working with. So I often recommend this to businesses.

As an entrepreneur, one of the most important steps to growing your business is understanding who your ideal customer is. But how do you define that customer? More importantly, how do you understand their journey from frustration to fulfilment? In this post, we’ll dive into the details of crafting an Ideal Customer Avatar (ICA), exploring how to address their needs and how your product or service can help transform their business.

The Journey of Transformation: From Frustration to Confidence

Before your ideal customer discovers your product or course, they are likely experiencing a range of frustrations. Picture this: they are overwhelmed by the amount of individual work required to serve each client. They’re exhausted, running from one task to the next, trying to make each customer feel like they’re the only one on the list. How many of us have felt this before? We’ve all been there – feeling like we’re drowning in tasks, doing our best for each individual, and struggling to keep up with the demand.

Before And After Grid - Feel

But imagine being able to systematise these tasks, streamline repetitive processes, and get through the volume of work more efficiently. That’s where you come in. By organising and chunking down your work into manageable parts, you can create a flow that not only increases your productivity but also helps you serve your customers more seamlessly. The goal is to take that sense of frustration and transform it into confidence, so your customer can feel more in control and accomplished in their work.

The Status Shift: From Imposter Syndrome to Expertise

One of the key challenges your ideal customer might face before working with you is imposter syndrome. In the beginning, they might appear to be managing all the areas of their business, but deep down, they know they’re not doing it as effectively or efficiently as they could be. This was something I experienced when I started my career in photography. I remember the first time I took on a job to photograph teddy bears in a shopping centre for a Build-a-Bear event. I had zero photography knowledge at the time, but I confidently said yes to the job. And when I showed up, I quickly realised I was in over my head.

Before And After Grid - Status

Sure, I could make it work, but I wasn’t as efficient or skilled as I could have been. Over time, I figured out the process and improved my efficiency. The moral of the story is this: many of us have taken on projects before, not feeling 100% prepared but willing to figure it out. However, when your customer gains the knowledge and skills from your course, they no longer have to “figure it out” on the fly. They can deliver with confidence and authenticity, eliminating that nagging feeling of imposter syndrome.

The Good vs. Evil Narrative: The Consequences of Inaction vs. The Rewards of Action

At a deeper level, there is a stark contrast between what would happen if your ideal customer doesn’t take action and what happens if they do. This is where the “Good vs. Evil” concept comes into play.

Before And After Grid - Good Vs Evil

The Evil Side: If they don’t invest in your course or product, they’ll remain stuck in a cycle of frustration. Their business growth will be stunted, and they’ll continually feel the weight of not being able to serve their clients the way they want to. They might even hit a point of burnout where they start resenting their work.

The Good Side: On the other hand, when they take that leap and gain the skills and knowledge they need, their business becomes more seamless. They’re confident in what they’re doing, and this confidence shines through in every interaction with their clients. They go from feeling overwhelmed and stuck to feeling empowered and accomplished. The transformation is not just in their business – it’s in their mindset.

Putting It All Together: The Ideal Customer Avatar Framework

To effectively define your Ideal Customer Avatar (ICA), it’s important to look at both sides of the journey. You need to consider:

  • How they feel before using your product or course (frustrated, overwhelmed, stuck)
  • How they feel after they implement what they’ve learned (confident, in control, accomplished)
  • The status shift that takes place (from imposter syndrome to expertise)
  • The consequences of not taking action (continued frustration and stunted growth)
  • The rewards of taking action (seamless operations and a confident mindset)

For those who have been in business for a while, creating an ICA might feel a bit like a step backward, but it’s essential. You can start by reviewing past clients – go through your invoices and pick out the clients you enjoyed working with or those who seemed to benefit most from your services. This will give you valuable insight into the types of customers you want to serve and help you better tailor your offerings.

Conclusion

Understanding your Ideal Customer Avatar is not just about identifying their needs – it’s about understanding their emotional journey and how you can provide the transformation they’re craving. Whether it’s moving from frustration to confidence, from imposter syndrome to expertise, or from overwhelm to organisation, your course or product can be the key to unlocking a smoother, more successful business experience for your customers.

By investing time in defining your ICA, you can ensure that you’re not only attracting the right clients but also creating products and services that truly make a difference in their lives. So take the time to do this work – it might just be the game-changer you need to take your business to the next level.
