The Most Important Google Ads Metrics Every Marketer Should Track

When you’re running Google Ads, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with data. So many metrics are available in the dashboard that it’s hard to know what matters. And honestly, the “right” metrics depend a lot on what your goals are. But regardless of whether you’re targeting the top, middle, or bottom of the funnel, there are some key numbers you simply can’t afford to ignore.

This blog isn’t about listing every single metric Google Ads offers. Instead, it’s about helping you focus on the ones that tell you how your ads are performing and whether you’re getting closer to your goals.

1. Conversions

Conversions

Let’s start with the most obvious one—conversions. This is the end goal. Whether it’s a sale, a sign-up, a download, or a phone call, your campaign is running to get people to do something. So, tracking conversions is non-negotiable.

But keep this in mind: a “conversion” can look different depending on your campaign objective. If you’re promoting a webinar, then a sign-up is your conversion. If you’re selling a product, it’s the purchase. So make sure you’ve properly set up conversion tracking in Google Ads or imported it from Google Analytics.

2. Conversion Rate

Conversion Rate

Getting conversions is great, but how many people had to click your ad before one of them converted?

That’s your conversion rate, and it tells you how efficient your campaign is.

Formula: Conversion Rate = (Conversions ÷ Clicks) x 100

If you’re getting 100 clicks but only one conversion, your conversion rate is 1%, and you might need to look into your landing page, offer, or targeting. A low conversion rate doesn’t always mean the ad is bad—it could be the page they’re landing on. Are they bouncing right away? Not scrolling? Not clicking your CTA?

That’s where micro-conversions come in (we’ll get to that in a bit).

3. Cost Per Conversion (a.k.a. Cost Per Action – CPA)

Cost Per Conversion

Now, what did each conversion cost you?

Cost Per Conversion shows how much money you’re spending to get someone to take action. You want this number as low as possible while still hitting your goals.

If your product sells for $20 and your cost per conversion is $25, then you’re losing money every time someone converts. That’s a clear signal to optimise your campaign.

Keep in mind that not all conversions are equal. A lead for a high-ticket item may cost more, but if that lead turns into a $2,000 customer, it’s well worth it.

4. Click-through rate (CTR)

Click Through Rate (CTR)

CTR tells you how many people saw your ad and clicked on it.

Formula: CTR = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) x 100

A low CTR usually means your ad isn’t catching attention or isn’t relevant to the audience seeing it. This is especially important at the top of the funnel, where your main goal is to attract attention.

A higher CTR generally means your ad copy and targeting are working well. But CTR isn’t always the ultimate measure. For video or awareness campaigns, you might not care if someone clicks—you care if they watch.

5. Impressions

Impressions

You might not think impressions are that important, but they tell a useful story—how often your ad is being shown.

If you have a low number of impressions, your targeting might be too narrow, your bids too low, or your ad rank might be suffering. If you’re running awareness campaigns, impressions matter a lot more because your goal is to get your brand in front of as many eyeballs as possible.

6. Average CPC (Cost Per Click)

Average CPC (Cost Per Click)

This is the average amount you’re paying for each click on your ad.

You want to keep your CPC in check so that you’re not overpaying to bring users to your site. But cheap clicks aren’t always the goal either—quality over quantity is important. If a $2 click leads to a $200 sale, that’s a good deal. If a $0.30 click leads to nothing, then it’s wasted money.

So don’t just chase cheap CPCs—chase valuable ones.

7. Micro-Conversions

Micro-Conversions

This is where most marketers go wrong—they only track the final conversion. But what if people aren’t converting at all? You need to understand what’s happening before the final conversion.

Enter: micro-conversions.

Micro-conversions are small actions that show progress toward a final conversion. Things like:

  • Watching a video on your landing page
  • Clicking “Add to Cart”
  • Scrolling halfway or to the bottom of the page
  • Clicking on your CTA button
  • Spending a decent amount of time on your site

Tracking these helps you understand where the user drops off in the funnel.

For example, if lots of users are clicking your ad but bouncing within 5 seconds, the problem probably lies in your landing page, not the ad itself. Or maybe people are scrolling but not watching your video. Maybe the play button is broken. You wouldn’t know unless you tracked that.

This data helps you make small tweaks that compound into real improvements, like moving your CTA higher on the page, changing button colours, or replacing a non-working video embed.

8. Bounce Rate & Time on Site (from Google Analytics 4)

Bounce Rate & Time on Site

These are technically from Google Analytics, but they’re still crucial if you’re trying to measure how users interact after clicking your ad.

A high bounce rate + short time on site = something’s off. Maybe your ad is misleading, or your landing page doesn’t match what people expected.

A good time on site and a low bounce rate generally mean users are at least interested, even if they haven’t converted yet. That’s where remarketing campaigns can come in and finish the job.

9. Video Views (For Video Campaigns)

Video Views (For Video Campaigns)

If you’re running a video campaign, then CTR, conversions, and CPCs might not even matter that much.

Here, you’re looking for:

  • View rate (how many people watched your video after it was served)
  • Video plays to 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%
  • Engagements or clicks on video CTAs

If nobody watches past 5 seconds, the hook might need improvement. If they watch the full thing but don’t click, maybe your CTA isn’t strong enough.

Final Thoughts: Track Smarter, Not Just More

There’s no single set of “must-track” metrics that works for every campaign. But there is a smarter way to track. Think of your funnel as a journey: from impression to click, to page engagement, to micro-conversions, to the final conversion.

Each metric tells you something different. Alone, they’re just numbers. Together, they paint a full picture of what’s working—and what’s not.

Here’s a quick summary of what to always keep an eye on:

  • Conversions
  • Conversion Rate
  • Cost Per Conversion
  • CTR
  • Impressions
  • Average CPC
  • Micro-conversions
  • Bounce Rate / Time on Site
  • Video Views (if relevant)

Track these well, and you’ll stop guessing what’s wrong with your ads—and start knowing.
