Why Your Google Ads Aren’t Converting (And How to Fix It Fast)

Why Your Google Ads Aren’t Converting (And How to Fix It Fast)
Read the video transcript

Ever stare at your Google Ads account, scratching your head, wondering why all that money you're spending just isn't turning into actual customers? You're not alone. It's a super common problem. But guess what? Most times, the fixes are surprisingly simple. First up, let's talk about keywords. This is a big one. Are you using keywords that are too general?

Think about it: if you sell 'running shoes' and your keyword is just 'shoes' you're probably getting clicks from people looking for dress shoes, sandals, you name it. They're just browsing, not buying running shoes. That's wasted money. Get specific. Use exact match and phrase match more often. Instead of 'shoes' try 'running shoes for men' in an exact match.

And don't forget negative keywords! If you don't sell 'used running shoes' add 'used' as a negative keyword to stop those irrelevant clicks. Next, let's look at your actual ads. Are they boring? Do they tell people what you offer and why they should click your ad instead of a competitor's? If your ad copy is just 'Buy Shoes' well, everyone's saying that.

Make your ads speak directly to your target audience. Highlight benefits, not just features. Instead of 'Great Shoes,' try 'Boost Your Speed with Our Lightweight Running Shoes' or 'Comfortable Running Shoes for Long-Distance Training.' Use strong calls to action like 'Shop Now' or 'Get Your Free Quote' And make sure your ad headlines and descriptions include your main keywords. This helps people know they're in the right place.

So, someone clicks your ad. Great! But then what happens? Are they landing on a messy, confusing page? Or worse, your homepage, where they have to hunt around for what they clicked on? If your landing page doesn't match the ad, or it's just plain hard to navigate, people will bounce faster than you can say 'conversion rate' Your landing page must be relevant to your ad.

If your ad says 'Buy Running Shoes' the landing page should be only about running shoes, not your entire shoe store. Make it clean, easy to read, and have a super clear call to action. Is there a big 'Add to Cart' button? Is the form easy to fill out? Test it yourself. If you're confused, your potential customers will be too.

Finally, and this might seem obvious, but are you tracking conversions? If you don't know what's working, how can you fix what's not? You might be getting clicks, but are those clicks turning into sales, leads, or calls? Set up conversion tracking in Google Ads. This tells you exactly when someone completes a valuable action on your website after clicking your ad.

Also, link your Google Ads to Google Analytics or GA4. This gives you even more data about what people are doing after they click. Without this info, you're flying blind. So there you have it: Check your keywords, make your ads compelling, fix your landing pages, and track everything. These aren't magic bullets, but they're the core foundations of successful Google Ads.

Take a few minutes, look at your campaigns with fresh pair of eyes, and start implementing these changes today. You might be surprised how quickly your conversions start to climb up. You set up your Google Ads campaign, you chose the keywords, you created what you thought was a solid ad, and still, no results. Maybe you’re seeing clicks but no sales. Or worse, barely any clicks at all.

Don’t worry. You’re not alone.

1. You’re Targeting the Wrong Keywords

Targeting The Wrong Keywords

Let’s start with the most common mistake: bad keyword targeting. If your ads aren’t showing to the right people, you won’t get conversions, no matter how great your ad looks.

What to check:

  • Are your keywords too broad?
  • Are you showing up for unrelated searches?
  • Are you bidding on keywords your actual customers would use?

Quick Fix:

2. Your Ad Copy Isn’t Connecting

Ad Copy Isn’t Connecting

Even if your ad gets seen, it still needs to earn the click. Generic or vague ads won’t grab attention. If your ad doesn’t match what someone is looking for, they’ll just scroll past it.

What to check:

  • Does your ad solve a problem?
  • Are you using benefits instead of just features?
  • Are you offering something unique?

Quick Fix:

  • Make your ad copy specific and benefit-driven.
  • Use numbers, offers, or guarantees when possible (like “Free Shipping” or “20% Off”).
  • Match the ad to the search intent. Someone looking for “emergency plumbing repair” doesn’t want to hear about your company history; they want speed and service.

3. Your Landing Page Doesn’t Match the Ad

Clicking your ad is just step one. If the landing page doesn’t match the promise of the ad, people will bounce fast. This is a big conversion killer.

What to check:

  • Does the page match what the ad says?
  • Is it easy to navigate?
  • Is there a clear next step?

Quick Fix:

  • Make sure the headline on your landing page matches your ad copy.
  • Keep the design clean and focused; don’t distract the user.
  • Use a clear, bold call to action (CTA), like “Get Your Free Quote” or “Book Now”.

4. You’re Not Tracking Conversions Properly

Not Tracking Conversions Properly

Sometimes your ads are working, you just aren’t seeing it because tracking isn’t set up right. You need to know what happens after the click.

What to check:

  • Have you set up conversion tracking in Google Ads?
  • Are you tracking things like form submissions, purchases, or phone calls?
  • Are your goals useful?

Quick Fix:

  • Set up Google Ads Conversion Tracking (you can find this under Tools > Conversions).
  • Use Google Tag Manager to manage your tracking more easily.
  • Connect Google Ads to Google Analytics for deeper insights.

5. Your Budget Is Spread Too Thin

Budget Is Spread Too Thin

It’s tempting to run multiple ads on a small budget, hoping one will hit. But if you spread yourself too thin, none of them will get enough data to perform.

  • Are you running too many campaigns at once?
  • Are your daily budgets too low?

Quick Fix:

  • Focus on one or two campaigns at a time.
  • Increase your daily budget enough to gather useful data (even $10–$20/day can be enough to start).
  • Pause underperforming ads and put your money into what’s working.

6. Your Ad Schedule Isn’t Optimised

Ad Schedule Isn’t Optimised

Are your ads showing at 2 a.m. when your ideal customers are asleep? You could be wasting money.

What to check:

  • Are you getting clicks during hours when you’re not open?
  • Do your customers tend to convert during certain times or days?

Quick Fix:

  • Use Google Ads’ ad schedule feature to only run ads during your best hours.
  • Review “Hour of Day” data in Google Ads to find your sweet spot.
  • Adjust bids by time, bidding higher during peak hours and lower (or pausing) during off-hours.

7. Your Bidding Strategy Is Off

Bidding Strategy Is Off

If your bids are too low, you won’t get seen. If they’re too high, you’ll waste money. Finding the right balance matters.

What to check:

  • Are you using manual or automated bidding?
  • Are you focusing on clicks or conversions?

Quick Fix:

8. You’re Not Using Ad Extensions

Not Using Ad Extensions

Ad extensions give you more space on the search results page and more chances to earn a click. Skipping them can hurt your ad performance.

What to check:

  • Are you using callouts, sitelinks, or structured snippets?
  • Are they updated and relevant?

Quick Fix:

  • Add sitelink extensions to show extra pages (like “Pricing,” “About,” or “Contact”).
  • Use callout extensions to highlight key points (“24/7 Support”, “No Hidden Fees”).
  • Keep them short, clear, and to the point.

9. Your Ads Don’t Build Trust

Ads Don’t Build Trust

People are careful where they click, especially if they’re spending money. If your ad or landing page looks sketchy, you’ve already lost.

What to check:

  • Does your brand look legit?
  • Do you have trust signals like reviews or security badges?

Quick Fix:

  • Add customer testimonials or review stars.
  • Use trust badges like “Secure Checkout” or “Money-Back Guarantee”.
  • Include contact information (real phone number, address, etc.) to build credibility.

10. You’re Not Giving It Enough Time

Google Ads Optimisation

Lastly, remember that Google Ads need time and data to optimise. Too many people launch a campaign, panic after 2 days, and start changing everything.

What to check:

  • Are you letting ads run long enough to gather data?
  • Are you making changes too fast?

Quick Fix:

  • Let your ads run at least 7–10 days before making big changes.
  • Focus on small, focused tweaks, not overhauls.
  • Track what works, and repeat it.

Final Thoughts

Google Ads is a powerful tool—but only if you know how to use it properly. If your ads aren’t converting, the solution is rarely more money. It’s usually a matter of clarity, targeting, and testing. Here’s a quick recap of how to fix your low conversions:

  • Target the right keywords
  • Write better ad copy
  • Improve your landing page
  • Track your conversions
  • Focus your budget
  • Adjust your schedule
  • Use smart bidding
  • Add ad extensions
  • Build trust
  • Be patient

The good news? You don’t have to be a pro to get results. Keep things simple, test one thing at a time, and stay consistent.

Your next conversion might be just a few tweaks away.
